Why Whangarei? PDF Print

Whangarei is renowned for its beaches at the Whangarei Heads and Tutukaka Coast, and most people stop to adore the Whangarei Falls and the yacht harbour.

Less known is the fantastic native bush even right next to town. There is wind-swept coastal bush with tea trees, lush river valley bush with tree ferns and Nikau palms, dry clay soil bush, steep mountain bush with Kauri trees, mangrove bush and an exotic (in NZ that is) pine plantation. The Subtropical Quarry Garden is a paradise for flower and exotic plant lovers.

Being in Northland means there is also a lot of Maori and settler history. Every fourth person here is Maori and there’s more to their unique history and culture than most guide books write about.

The Whangarei Harbour and the unique Poor Knights Islands off the Tutukaka Coast are home to a very interesting marine life, making every dive an unforgettable experience.

This area is also renowned for its conservation success concerning Kiwi, Kaka parrots, Tuatara lizards and other endangered wildlife.

Whangarei is the commercial centre of Northland, and Northland is one of the most visited tourist destinations in New Zealand. Northland is home to the biggest remaining Kauri trees and the first canoes from Polynesia landed on its shores. Northland is also home to the Bay of Islands, a mass tourist destination – suitable for a day trip - with many water activities to chose from. Cape Reinga is the northern tip of Northland and New Zealand where two oceans meet, it also has great meaning for Maori, to get there you can drive along the famous 90 mile beach.

We are excited to live in one of our favourite places that we discovered on our travels, and we hope to get you just as excited about Whangarei and Northland as we are!
