Highlights

This northernmost city in New Zealand is a great travel destination for anyone who wants to experience a fantastic holiday. There are plenty of beautiful places that you can visit.

The Whangarei Falls are said to be the most photogenic waterfall in New Zealand. The huge 500 year old Kauri trees are well worth a visit. Beaches like Ocean Beach or Whale Bay are many a New Zealander’s favourite beach while others are drawn towards the yacht harbour in the Town Basin where they envy the globetrotting yacht crews and browse the art galleries and shops. Golf deserves a mention with an incredible 12 golf courses in the region and for divers the Poor Knights Islands are a unique opportunity to experience subtropical diving in a marine reserve.

Plant lovers will visit the Subtropical Quarry Garden or the fernery and fishermen will take a cruise from the big game fishing ports of Ruakaka or Tutukaka. To climb the summits of the Whangarei Heads (Mount Manaia, Bream Head, Mount Aubry, Lion Rock etc.) is strenuous but will most certainly be rewarded with fantastic views.

Whangarei is a real Kiwi town, you can even visit a live Kiwi, an informative heritage park with historical buildings, a clock museum, many art galleries and exhibitions and lots of other entertainment (like cinema, swimming pools, sports facilities, events etc.).
